Every convention season, social media is flooded with the same two types of posts: “Did anyone see me at the con?” and “Why didn’t anyone take my photo?” It can be frustrating to spend months sewing, crafting, and painting a costume only to find zero evidence of it online.
The hard truth is that if you really want photos of your cosplay, you have to do it yourself.
Getting photos of your cosplay is entirely your responsibility.
If you want to ensure you have high-quality memories of your hard work, you have to be proactive. Just because you posed for hundreds of photos and dozens of videos, it doesn’t mean that you will ever see those photos.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that if someone takes your photo, they are obligated to post and share it. Photographers take hundreds, sometimes thousands, of photos at an event. They are under no requirement to edit or upload any of them unless they are being paid. even if they do post their photos, there are a million reasons none of them will never be seen, but it doesn’t matter. The photos belong to the photographer.
One trick that many try is to be proactive with tags. sometimes this works. If you are relying on candid photos taken in the hallways, make it easy for people to find you. Carry a small card with your social media handle, however, remember when they are handling hundreds of photos and a doen or more cards, they can’t always remember who to tag on what photo.
1. Use Your Cell Phone
The easiest way to get a photo is to use what you have and it guarantees that you instantly have your cosplay photos
- Ask a Friend: If you’re attending with a group, set aside a few minutes when you first get their and your cosplay is at it’s best to take photos of each other.
- Ask another: If you are already posing for someone else, politely ask if they would take one on your phone as well. Most people will have no problem with it.
2. Seek Out the Professionals
If you want something better than a quick phone snap, look for the experts.
- On-Site Photo Booths: Many conventions now host dedicated photography booths with professional lighting and backdrops. These are often affordable and provide a polished look.
- Book a Private Shoot: If you want a specific look or a guaranteed professional quality photos, hire a photographer for a private session. This ensures you get dedicated time, professional editing, and a choice images.
There may be hundreds of photos taken of you over a weekend, but you may never see them. If you want to make sure your craftsmanship is documented, don’t wait for someone else to do it. Ask for the photo, book the shoot, and take charge of your own convention legacy.
