The Ultimate Con-Bag Checklist: Essentials Every Cosplayer Forgets

We’ve all been there. You’ve spent three months hunched over a cutting mat, burning your fingertips on hot glue, and putting the final touches on your masterpiece. You look incredible, you step into the convention center, and within twenty minutes, a rogue elbow in the crowded vendor hall snaps a crucial piece of your shoulder armor.

Panicking? Don’t be. The difference between a ruined weekend and a quick five-minute fix comes down to what is sitting in your con bag.

While everyone remembers their phone, badge, and wallet, it’s the emergency repair and survival gear that separates the veterans from the rookies. Before you head out the door, make sure these often-forgotten essentials are packed and ready to save the day.

1. The “Emergency Fix” Adhesive Suite

Do not rely on a single roll of tape. Different costume malfunctions require completely different chemical solutions.

  • Superglue (Gel Formula): The absolute savior for snapped plastic, resin, or clean foam breaks. The gel formula is key here—it won’t run down your fingers or ruin your fabric if your hands shake.
  • Top-Stick / Fashion Tape: If a low-cut neckline is slipping or a boot cover won’t stay up on your thigh, double-sided garment tape is your best friend. It sticks to skin and fabric without leaving residue.
  • Safety Pins (Assorted Sizes): When a zipper completely blows out or a seam rips in a high-stress area, safety pins are your structural backup until you can get back to the hotel room.

2. The Cosplay Hydration & Fuel Hacks

Cosplaying is an athletic event. You are carrying extra weight, trapped in non-breathable materials, and walking miles under heavy convention lighting.

  • The “Straw” Rule: If you are wearing a helmet, a mask, face paint, or heavy prosthetic makeup, a standard water bottle is useless. Always pack a handful of flexible, extra-long reusable straws so you can hydrate without ruining your face or having to unmask.
  • Non-Melting Energy: Avoid chocolate or sticky protein bars that turn into a liquid mess in a warm bag. Stick to almonds, beef jerky, or dried fruit to keep your blood sugar steady.

3. Quick Grooming & Makeup Triage

Between the sweat of the con floor and the friction of your outfit, your presentation will shift throughout the day.

  • Blotting Papers: Instead of caking more powder over a sweaty face (which leads to a cakey texture in photos), use oil-blotting sheets to remove shine instantly.
  • A Travel-Sized Comb & Hairpins: Friction against the back of your costume’s collar will turn even the most perfectly styled wig into a matted birds-nest by 2:00 PM. Keep a small comb and a few extra bobby pins handy to clean up the look before stepping up to a photographer’s camera.

Pro Tip: Keep all your emergency repair gear in a clear, separate mesh pouch inside your bag. When a crisis happens, you don’t want to be blindly digging past snacks and props to find a safety pin!
