The 40th anniversary of Dragon Con officially launched on Thursday, September 3, 2026, and Day One was nothing short of monumental. Tens of thousands of fans descended upon the five host venues, kicking off five non-stop days of 24-hour fandom and setting the stage for an truly epic weekend.
However, getting your badge was an endurance test with brutal registration wait times. During peak pickup hours, attendees waited in two-to-three-hour lines that wound around city blocks, made even more grueling by the intense Atlanta heat and humidity. These logistical hurdles were particularly frustrating at Disability Services, where attendees reported chaotic organization, and extended wait times without adequate shade or seating. This was a challenging start for fans who needed smooth accessibility the most.

Despite the taxing registration process, Thursday at Dragon Con held on to its special place in the hearts of everyone. The afternoon offered a brief chance to explore the venues before the massive weekend crowds fully settled in. Cosplayers filled the famous carpeted staircases, hotel balconies, and glass skybridges to display their first builds of the event. You could see everything from hyper-detailed armor sets to clever meme costumes.

Thursday also marked the opening of one of the the Robert A. Heinlein “Pay It Forward” Blood Drive. Hosted by LifeSouth Community Blood Centers, where fans rolled up their sleeves to support Atlanta-area hospitals.
