We have all been there: your convention is two days away, your living room is covered in foam and fabric, and you are running on pure caffeine and little sleep.
Welcome to Con Crunch, that last-minute rush to finish your cosplay. Feeling stressed before a show is common, but you don’t have to burn out. Here’s a simple guide to help you finish your build, and enjoy your weekend.
1. Focus
When time is short, stop trying to make everything perfect, instead focus on the main parts of your outfit.
- Separate Needs from Wants: Make a list of what you must finish (the main costume and wig) versus extra details (small props or painted textures).
- Focus on Big Details: Work on the parts of the costume people will notice from a distance or in photos. Skip tiny details if you run out of time.
- Keep It Simple: Don’t try new, complex crafting methods during a rush. Stick to tools and materials you already know.
2. Organize
Working in a messy space slows you down and increases stress.
- Keep Tools Nearby: Put all your glue, scissors, and materials in one spot so you don’t waste time looking for them.
- Do Similar Tasks Together: Cut all your foam at once, do all your sewing together, and do all your painting in one go.
- Throw Away Scrap: Clear away trash and leftover materials as you go so you have room to work.
3. Ask for Help
You do not have to do everything by yourself.
- Work with Friends: Invite others over to work together. Friends can help with easy tasks like cutting foam, pinning fabric, or sanding edges.
4. Take Care of Yourself
You cannot make good progress if you are completely exhausted. Tiredness leads to mistakes, ruined materials, and accidental injuries.
- Get Basic Rest: Try to get at least 6 hours of sleep, eat real meals, and drink plenty of water
- Take Short Breaks: Step away from your desk for 10 or 15 minutes every few hours to stretch your back and rest your eyes.
- Do Not Craft in the Hotel Room: Finish your building before you leave home. Hotel rooms have bad lighting, poor ventilation, and make it hard to relax.
5. If All Else Fails
Switch to a Casual Version: If a big build is not going to be done, wear a casual or street-style version of the character instead. A simple, finished outfit is much better than an uncomfortable, unfinished one. And this gives you plenty of time before the next con

Pack these items in your bag to fix any costume problems at the convention:
- Glue: Super glue gel or a mini hot glue gun.
- Fasteners: Safety pins, double-sided tape, and zip ties.
- Basic Repairs: A small sewing kit, extra needles, and band-aids.
Remember: It is okay if your costume is not 100% complete. Conventions happen all the time, a complete costume can be premiered later. Get your costume to a comfortable state, have fun, and enjoy the show!
